Dress for Excess: Fashion in Regency England
The Royal Pavilion
The Prince Regent Gallery
Brighton
This fashion exhibition celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Regency Act by looking at the life of George IV as Prince, Regent and King through fashions of the late Georgian period. George loved fashion and design - the more opulent and extravagant the better and the exotic, oriental design of the Royal Pavilion, which was his seaside residence, bears testament to this.? His coronation was the most expensive in British history and his coronation robe will be on public display for the first time in 30 years (on loan from Madam Tussauds, Merlin Entertainment Group).
The exhibition will include men and women’s fashions from a tailored dandy’s costume and military uniform worn at the Battle of Waterloo to elegant high-waisted cotton muslin gowns and beautiful silk garments, highlighting style influences from the period and themes from George’s life. This new exhibition space, the Prince Regent Gallery, is dedicated to George himself, and his clothes, includes a beautifully printed banyan (an early form of indoor coat or dressing gown) from the 1770s and huge breeches worn towards the end of his life as his waistline expanded.

Shirley Craven and Hull Traders
Revolutionary Post-War Fabrics and Furniture
Harris Museum and Art Gallery
Market Square
Preston
Lancashire
PR1 2PP

This is the last chance to see this exhibition. Hull Traders was a post-war design company based in Lancashire, producing big, bold textiles in eye-popping colours specializing in pop-tastic fabrics and furniture. Shirley Craven was the company’s leading designer and her abstract designs capture the exuberance of the swinging sixties. Other famous artists who designed for Hull Traders include Eduardo Paolozzi, Ivon Hitchens and Althea McNish, Britain’s first and most distinguished textile designer of Afro-Caribbean descent. This exhibition is the first retrospective of Hull Traders. It’s a Hull Museums exhibition and is curated by leading design historian Lesley Jackson, author of Shirley Craven and Hull Traders - Revolutionary Fabrics and Furniture 1957-1980.
